blockchain and social media

Yes, you read that right. Frank McCourt, a billionaire real estate tycoon, is investing over $100 million into reforming social media, apparently. This project has been named “Project Liberty” and revolves around the construction of a publicly accessible database of people’s social connections, according to Biznews. This initiative came about after users around the world stated their fear that big techs like Facebook have accumulated too much power on their data over the last decade and this concern was shared by Frank McCourt too. With these new reforms, he is hoping to be able to allow social media users to move records of their relationships between platforms as opposed to being restricted to the dominant apps. “In the same way that blockchain keeps information about the tokens in people’s digital wallets, it will do the same for social media”, according to Biznews.

From what we understand, this initiative will make the online economy more equitable and free social networks from corporate control and protect privacy in order to foster innovation and return the ownership of data to the individuals. Here’s what McCourt had to say: “Like so many others, I’ve watched with deepening distress as the technology meant to provide universal access to opportunity and bring us together has become a primary reason for extreme polarization, division, and inequity,” said McCourt. “Today’s social media platforms increasingly control our data, fuel division, erode our privacy, and threaten our democracies. These problems can’t be regulated away. It’s time to reinvent a new way forward. I’m committed to leveraging my expertise, networks, and resources to create a better public infrastructure for the internet — one that results in healthier societies and economies.” He basically wants to save the internet from big techs. How thoughtful of him.

As a leading Digital Marketing Agency operating in the UAE, we’ve seen so many things happening with big tech companies and it almost feels like no one is really doing anything about it. At least until Frank came along. We cannot wait to see how far this will go when it comes to business and online advertising, as something like this could very well affect the way digital campaigns are performed online.
