Website Architecture — What is it and how can you use it to its full potential

Website visitors can be ruthless. If your website took an additional second to load or displayed some annoying bright color that the visitor didn’t find appealing, some of them won’t even give you a chance and just leave as quickly as they came. According to Hubspot, one in two people will leave a website after visiting just one page — you definitely don’t have a lot of time to make a good impression.

One of the things that we’ve learnt over the years as a leading Digital Marketing Agency operating in the UAE is that it’s important to structure your site in an intuitive and easy-to-navigate way. People don’t want to spend hours looking for information or waiting for the pages to load — you have to present everything to them on a silver platter, which is not always easy to do but definitely not impossible. When it comes to website architecture, it is reflected through internal linking and plays a key role in helping users find the information they’re seeking as well as helping search engine crawlers understand the relationship between different pages, according to Hubspot. Here are a few good practices we always apply when it comes to our own clients:

  • Create a straight-forward top-level navigation menu. Don’t create too many and make sure that the name of each tab delivers the promised content. People don’t want to be clicking on “About” just to be presented with products and other irrelevant information.
  • Keep your URL’s simple and user-friendly, just like this: www.minstalk.com/blogger/twitter-tips

It’s annoying when you have something like this: www.example.com/#9243uyf92bc2bcn2oino2&category=w78rh. Creating subdirectories might help too.

  • Model your website after the top players in the industry. You’re not copying anything, you’re simply getting inspired and readjusting the good examples to your own needs. Major brands got it right and you can learn from them.
  • Keep it consistent. Don’t use different fonts or change tonality — keep it the same throughout as it is more pleasant to the eye and it just makes more sense and looks more legit.
  • Make sure visitors don’t have to click too many times to see the entirety of your website. Keep it concise and make sure users can click-through all the sub-category pages within 3 or 4 clicks.
  • Implement SEO — that’s something we’ll never repeat enough. Make your website visible through keywords.

There you go!
